Clear leaves and nesting material out from between the pins once or twice a year. Once enough debris packs in, a bird can stand on that instead of on the spikes, which is the one way a fitted strip stops working.

Spikes work by removing the room a bird needs to stand. A sparrow needs very little room, and on a narrow ledge it can settle between the pins.
Where the strip does help is on a wide surface a flock is using as a communal perch, and along an eaves line they stage on before going into a gap.
Where it does not help is a small recess, a narrow sill or a gap they are nesting in. Netting or mesh is the right product for those.
Sold per 50 cm with no minimum, so trying one strip on the surface in question costs very little.
Worth saying plainly, because it decides what you order. Nine pages on this site sell the SAME stainless strip, named for the animal people type into a search box. There is no different spike behind the pigeon page or the seagull page. What changes from page to page is the advice, and that genuinely does change.
This page could easily be written as though a spike strip solves small birds. It does not, and the whole range would be less trustworthy if we pretended otherwise.
The physics is simple. A 115 mm pin at 60 per metre denies a landing to anything that needs a foot of clear standing room. A sparrow needs a few centimetres, and it will happily use the base of the strip itself as shelter.
So the useful cases are specific: a broad parapet or sign top used as a communal roost, and an eaves line used as a staging perch. In both, the strip breaks up an open surface a flock was treating as one perch.
For everything else, mesh. Close the gap, net the recess, and use the netting on the bird netting page rather than buying spikes twice. Will spikes get rid of sparrows?
Not reliably, and we would rather say so. They are small enough to settle between the pins on a narrow surface.
So when are they worth fitting?
On a wide surface being used as a communal roost, and along an eaves line used as a staging perch before the birds go into a gap.
What should I use instead?
Netting or mesh. Close the recess or the gap they are actually using, which is on our bird netting page.
Why do you sell a sparrow spike page at all?
Because people search for it, and because there are cases where the strip does help. Rather than remove the page we would rather it told you the truth.
Will two rows work better on a narrow sill?
Marginally. If a narrow sill is the problem, the honest answer is still mesh.
What about mayas around the house?
Same answer. Small birds are a gap problem more than a surface problem, so close the gap.
They are nesting behind my aircon bracket.
Mesh the gap once the nest is finished with. A strip on the bracket does not address the cavity.
Will spikes hurt a small bird that lands between them?
No. The wires are blunt and they are not designed to injure anything of any size.
Do they work on swallows?
No. Swallows build a mud cup against a vertical surface, which a horizontal spike strip has no effect on.
Will they stop the droppings under the eaves?
Only if the birds are standing on a surface the strip can cover. If they are entering a gap, the gap is the job.
Can I fit spikes and netting together?
Yes, and on a mixed problem that is usually the right combination: net the recesses, spike the wide flat runs.
Is one strip enough to test with?
Yes. There is no minimum order, which is why we suggest testing rather than buying for a whole elevation on a guess.
What are they made of?
304 stainless steel pins on a UV stabilised polycarbonate base. The pins do not rust and the base does not go chalky in the sun.
How are they sold?
Per 50 cm strip, with no minimum. Order one if one is all the ledge needs.
How many strips do I need?
Measure the run in centimetres, divide by 50 and round up. The half metre you leave bare at the end is exactly where they will stand.
Do I need two rows?
On anything wider than about 15 cm, yes. One row down the middle of a wide ledge leaves landing room on both sides of it.
What do I fix them with?
UV stabilised silicone adhesive on masonry and tile, screws or nails where there is something to bite into, cable ties on railings and pipes.
Do I have to prepare the surface?
Yes, and it is the step people skip. Scrape off the old droppings and moss, wash the surface, let it dry. Dirt under adhesive is why a strip lifts after one rainy season.
Can I cut them?
Yes. Trim the last strip so the run finishes flush and there is no gap at the end.
Will they fit a curved ledge?
Yes, in short lengths. Several 50 cm pieces follow a curve; one long piece forced round it will lift at the ends.
Do they hurt the sparrow?
No. The wires are blunt and closely spaced. The animal arrives, finds nowhere to put its feet, and goes somewhere else. That is the whole mechanism.
Are they safe around children and pets?
They are meant for surfaces out of reach. Fit them where nobody puts a hand: above head height, along a parapet, on top of a fence rail.
Will they rust in the rain?
No. 304 stainless is the reason this version costs more than the plastic one, and in a coastal or monsoon climate it is the version worth buying.
How long do they last?
They are made for permanent outdoor use. We do not publish a figure in years, because the honest answer depends on the site.
Are they visible from the ground?
The base is clear and about 5 mm high, and the wires are thin. From street level most people never notice them.
Do you install them?
No, we supply only. Anything at height should be a job for someone equipped to work there safely.
