Looking after it
Clear leaves and nesting material out from between the pins once or twice a year. Once enough debris packs in, a bird can stand on that instead of on the spikes, which is the one way a fitted strip stops working.

Wrens are among the smallest birds you will meet and they nest in crevices rather than on open surfaces.
A spike strip addresses open surfaces. Against a crevice nester it does very little on its own.
Where it earns its place is the wide ledge or beam above the crevice, where a group perches before going in.
For the crevice itself, mesh. Sold per 50 cm with no minimum if you want to treat the perch as well.
Worth saying plainly, because it decides what you order. Nine pages on this site sell the SAME stainless strip, named for the animal people type into a search box. There is no different spike behind the pigeon page or the seagull page. What changes from page to page is the advice, and that genuinely does change.
There is a version of this page that would simply not mention the limitation, and it would sell about the same number of strips and disappoint more people.
The behaviour that matters is nesting, not perching. A wren picks a gap: behind a downpipe bracket, in a hollow block end, under a loose flashing, inside a rolled up awning. None of those is a surface a strip covers.
So the sequence is mesh first. Wait until any nest in use is finished with, clear it, and close the gap with a fine stainless mesh that a small bird cannot push through. Our bird netting page covers the mesh sizes.
The strip is worth adding where a wide beam, a sign top or a run of parapet sits directly above the crevices, because that is a real perch and removing it makes the whole area less attractive. Treat it as the second half of the job rather than the first.

Will spikes stop wrens?
On their own, mostly not. A wren nests in a crevice and a spike strip covers a surface.
What should I do instead?
Close the crevice with a fine mesh, once you are sure nothing is nesting in it.
Then why buy the strip?
For the wide perch above the crevices, if there is one. It makes the area less attractive as a whole.
How small a gap do they use?
Smaller than you would expect. If you can push a finger in, treat it as a possible nest site.
Where should I look?
Behind downpipe brackets, in open hollow block ends, under loose flashing, inside rolled awnings and behind signage.
Is it wrong to close the gap?
Not once the nest is finished with. Closing an occupied one is wrong, and it also creates a smell you will not forget.
Will the strip harm such a small bird?
No. The wires are blunt regardless of the size of the bird.
Can I use the strip inside a carport or a covered walkway?
Yes, on the beams. Covered spaces are exactly where small birds settle in the rainy season.
Would netting be cheaper?
For a crevice problem, usually yes, and it will work where the strip will not.

Do the same points apply to swiftlets?
Broadly. Anything that nests on or in a structure rather than perching on it needs exclusion, not a perch deterrent.

What are they made of?
304 stainless steel pins on a UV stabilised polycarbonate base. The pins do not rust and the base does not go chalky in the sun.

How many strips do I need?
Measure the run in centimetres, divide by 50 and round up. The half metre you leave bare at the end is exactly where they will stand.
Do I need two rows?
On anything wider than about 15 cm, yes. One row down the middle of a wide ledge leaves landing room on both sides of it.
What do I fix them with?
UV stabilised silicone adhesive on masonry and tile, screws or nails where there is something to bite into, cable ties on railings and pipes.
Do I have to prepare the surface?
Yes, and it is the step people skip. Scrape off the old droppings and moss, wash the surface, let it dry. Dirt under adhesive is why a strip lifts after one rainy season.
Can I cut them?
Yes. Trim the last strip so the run finishes flush and there is no gap at the end.
Will they fit a curved ledge?
Yes, in short lengths. Several 50 cm pieces follow a curve; one long piece forced round it will lift at the ends.
Do they hurt the wren?
No. The wires are blunt and closely spaced. The animal arrives, finds nowhere to put its feet, and goes somewhere else. That is the whole mechanism.
Are they safe around children and pets?
They are meant for surfaces out of reach. Fit them where nobody puts a hand: above head height, along a parapet, on top of a fence rail.
Will they rust in the rain?
No. 304 stainless is the reason this version costs more than the plastic one, and in a coastal or monsoon climate it is the version worth buying.
How long do they last?
They are made for permanent outdoor use. We do not publish a figure in years, because the honest answer depends on the site.
Are they visible from the ground?
The base is clear and about 5 mm high, and the wires are thin. From street level most people never notice them.
Do you install them?
No, we supply only. Anything at height should be a job for someone equipped to work there safely.
