Looking after it
Clear leaves and nesting material out from between the pins once or twice a year. Once enough debris packs in, a bird can stand on that instead of on the spikes, which is the one way a fitted strip stops working.

The common myna is an introduced species here. It is noisy, it gathers in numbers, and it nests in cavities: roof voids, eaves, ducts, ceiling gaps and behind signage.
Spikes deal with the perching and the gathering. They do not deal with the hole, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a strip that half solves the problem.
Fit along eaves, the top of a wall plate, roof edges and any ledge the flock uses to stage before going inside.
Sold per 50 cm with no minimum, so an eaves line costs what it measures.
Worth saying plainly, because it decides what you order. Nine pages on this site sell the SAME stainless strip, named for the animal people type into a search box. There is no different spike behind the pigeon page or the seagull page. What changes from page to page is the advice, and that genuinely does change.
Mynas behave differently from every other bird on this site, and it changes the advice. Pigeons and gulls want a surface. Mynas want a hole, and the surface is only the doorstep they use on the way in.
So the sequence matters. Spike the ledges and the eaves line, and separately close the cavity with mesh or board once you are certain nothing is nesting inside it. Doing the spikes and skipping the hole leaves you with a quieter ledge and the same roof void.
Timing is a real constraint. Never seal a cavity while a nest is in use, both for the obvious reason and because a sealed cavity with young inside becomes a smell and a fly problem in a fortnight.
They are also a food driven bird, closely associated with rubbish and with outdoor eating areas. Spikes on a canteen ledge work; spikes on a canteen ledge with an open bin under it work considerably less well.

Are these a special myna product?
No, the same 304 stainless strip. The page is about the myna's habits, which are different enough to change what you should do.
Will spikes stop them nesting in my roof?
Not on their own. Spikes stop them perching outside it. Closing the cavity with mesh or board is what stops the nesting, and the two jobs go together.
Where should I fit them?
Along the eaves line, the wall plate, roof edges, and any ledge or sign top where the group gathers before going in.
There is a nest inside the roof already.
Leave it until it is finished with, then clean the void out and close the entry. Sealing an occupied cavity creates a worse problem than the one you started with.
They are extremely noisy in the morning.
Find the staging perch, which is usually the highest exposed edge nearby, and treat that as well as the roof line.
Do mynas learn to avoid the spikes?
They learn to use somewhere else, which is the point. What they do not do is learn to stand on a surface that has no standing room.
Are mynas protected?
The common myna is an introduced species in the Philippines and is generally treated as a pest bird. Even so, this is a deterrent product and nothing we sell is intended to harm a bird of any species.
Will they work on the ducts and vents?
The ledge above a vent, yes. The vent opening itself needs mesh, not spikes.
What about behind signage?
Spike the top edge of the sign, then close the gap behind it. That cavity is a classic myna site.
Do they work against starlings and sparrows too?
Against starlings, reasonably. Against sparrows, not reliably: a sparrow is small enough to sit between the pins.
Is there any point if my neighbour feeds them?
Less than there should be. Spikes move a bird off a surface, not out of a neighbourhood with a food source in it.
How many strips for an eaves run?
Measure the eaves in centimetres, divide by 50, round up, and add one for the awkward end.
What are they made of?
304 stainless steel pins on a UV stabilised polycarbonate base. The pins do not rust and the base does not go chalky in the sun.
How are they sold?
Per 50 cm strip, with no minimum. Order one if one is all the ledge needs.
How many strips do I need?
Measure the run in centimetres, divide by 50 and round up. The half metre you leave bare at the end is exactly where they will stand.
Do I need two rows?
On anything wider than about 15 cm, yes. One row down the middle of a wide ledge leaves landing room on both sides of it.
What do I fix them with?
UV stabilised silicone adhesive on masonry and tile, screws or nails where there is something to bite into, cable ties on railings and pipes.
Do I have to prepare the surface?
Yes, and it is the step people skip. Scrape off the old droppings and moss, wash the surface, let it dry. Dirt under adhesive is why a strip lifts after one rainy season.
Can I cut them?
Yes. Trim the last strip so the run finishes flush and there is no gap at the end.
Will they fit a curved ledge?
Yes, in short lengths. Several 50 cm pieces follow a curve; one long piece forced round it will lift at the ends.
Do they hurt the myna?
No. The wires are blunt and closely spaced. The animal arrives, finds nowhere to put its feet, and goes somewhere else. That is the whole mechanism.
Are they safe around children and pets?
They are meant for surfaces out of reach. Fit them where nobody puts a hand: above head height, along a parapet, on top of a fence rail.
Will they rust in the rain?
No. 304 stainless is the reason this version costs more than the plastic one, and in a coastal or monsoon climate it is the version worth buying.
How long do they last?
They are made for permanent outdoor use. We do not publish a figure in years, because the honest answer depends on the site.
Are they visible from the ground?
The base is clear and about 5 mm high, and the wires are thin. From street level most people never notice them.
Do you install them?
No, we supply only. Anything at height should be a job for someone equipped to work there safely.
