Looking after it
Clear leaves and nesting material out from between the pins once or twice a year. Once enough debris packs in, a bird can stand on that instead of on the spikes, which is the one way a fitted strip stops working.

Worth saying plainly, because it decides what you order. Nine pages on this site sell the SAME stainless strip, named for the animal people type into a search box. There is no different spike behind the pigeon page or the seagull page. What changes from page to page is the advice, and that genuinely does change.
Pigeon behaviour is what makes them the easiest bird on this list to move on. They are not agile in the way a small bird is. They commit to a landing, they need room to put both feet down and rotate, and a strip that denies that room ends the visit before it starts.
It also means they are predictable. Look for the white streaking and you have found the roost. Treat that surface first, then look immediately above and below it, because the next choice is usually within a metre or two.
Balconies are the common case in the cities. The rail, the aircon unit and the ledge above the window are three separate surfaces and treating one of them just moves the problem to the other two.
One caution worth repeating. Dried pigeon droppings are a health matter, not just a mess. Wet them down before you scrape, wear a mask and gloves, and do not dry sweep a build up in an enclosed balcony.

Are pigeon spikes different from your standard bird spikes?
No. It is the same 304 stainless strip. The difference on this page is where to put it.
Where do I actually fit them?
Follow the droppings. Window ledges, the top of a split aircon unit, balcony rails, parapets and the top edge of signage, in that order of frequency.
How many for a typical aircon unit?
Two or three 50 cm strips across the top, finishing flush at both ends.
They just moved to the ledge above.
That is normal and it is why we say to treat the surfaces around the roost, not only the roost. Pigeons relocate a metre before they leave a building.
Is it safe to fit these on a condo balcony?
Check your building rules first, because many buildings have a policy on anything fixed to the facade. The strip itself is low, clear and needs no power.
How do I clean the droppings safely?
Wet them down first, wear gloves and a mask, and do not dry sweep. Dried droppings should not be turned into dust in an enclosed space.
Will they hurt the pigeons?
No. The wires are blunt. A pigeon that cannot land simply carries on to somewhere it can.
Do pigeons get used to them?
No, in the way they do get used to a plastic owl. This is a physical barrier rather than a scare, and physical barriers do not lose their effect.
Will they work on a narrow sill?
Yes, and a narrow sill is the easiest case: one row covers it.
What about a wide parapet?
Two rows, one near each edge. A single row down the centre of a 40 cm parapet leaves two comfortable landing strips.
Can I combine them with netting?
Yes, and on a large infestation that is the right answer: net the recesses and spike the ledges.
Do they help with the noise?
Only where the noise is birds landing and walking overhead. If they are nesting in a roof void, the void needs closing.
What are they made of?
304 stainless steel pins on a UV stabilised polycarbonate base. The pins do not rust and the base does not go chalky in the sun.

How many strips do I need?
Measure the run in centimetres, divide by 50 and round up. The half metre you leave bare at the end is exactly where they will stand.
Do I need two rows?
On anything wider than about 15 cm, yes. One row down the middle of a wide ledge leaves landing room on both sides of it.
What do I fix them with?
UV stabilised silicone adhesive on masonry and tile, screws or nails where there is something to bite into, cable ties on railings and pipes.
Do I have to prepare the surface?
Yes, and it is the step people skip. Scrape off the old droppings and moss, wash the surface, let it dry. Dirt under adhesive is why a strip lifts after one rainy season.
Can I cut them?
Yes. Trim the last strip so the run finishes flush and there is no gap at the end.
Will they fit a curved ledge?
Yes, in short lengths. Several 50 cm pieces follow a curve; one long piece forced round it will lift at the ends.
Do they hurt the pigeon?
No. The wires are blunt and closely spaced. The animal arrives, finds nowhere to put its feet, and goes somewhere else. That is the whole mechanism.
Are they safe around children and pets?
They are meant for surfaces out of reach. Fit them where nobody puts a hand: above head height, along a parapet, on top of a fence rail.
Will they rust in the rain?
No. 304 stainless is the reason this version costs more than the plastic one, and in a coastal or monsoon climate it is the version worth buying.
How long do they last?
They are made for permanent outdoor use. We do not publish a figure in years, because the honest answer depends on the site.
Are they visible from the ground?
The base is clear and about 5 mm high, and the wires are thin. From street level most people never notice them.
Do you install them?
No, we supply only. Anything at height should be a job for someone equipped to work there safely.
