Bird spikes, netting and deterrents

Bird spikes in stainless steel and polycarbonate, bird netting and mesh, and non contact deterrents including repellent gel, reflective tape, hanging discs and sonic and ultrasonic units. There are also species strips for pigeons, seagulls and snakes, climbing animal spikes for fences and feeder poles, and blunt cat spikes for fence tops.

Start with the bird and the surface. Pigeons, gulls and crows on a ledge, sill, gutter or sign are a spike job. Small birds such as sparrows can settle between the pins, so netting suits those better. For a surface you cannot fix anything to, a gel or a tape is usually the answer.

Stainless steel is stronger, resists corrosion outdoors including near the coast, and is the usual choice on commercial buildings. Polycarbonate is lighter, costs less and is close to invisible from the ground, which matters on a period property or a shopfront.

Measure the full run you want to protect, divide by the strip length and round up. A bare half metre at the end is where the birds will go. On a wide ledge you may need two rows, because a single row down the middle still leaves landing space either side.

Yes. Both the steel and the polycarbonate strips cut with tin snips, so you can finish a run neatly and work around a pipe or a bracket.

With exterior adhesive, screws, nails or cable ties. Most strips have a glue channel and screw holes so you can use whichever suits the surface. Clean the surface first, because old droppings and loose paint are the usual reason a strip lifts later.

No. They are a physical barrier, not a trap and not a shock device. A bird tries the surface, finds nowhere to stand and goes somewhere else.

Yes. The pins are blunt enough that cats and dogs are not injured by them. They are uncomfortable to stand on, which is the whole point.

Yes, gulls are one of the birds spikes work best on. They are large, they need room to land, and a spiked ridge or parapet takes that room away.

Yes, if you fit them before the nest is built. Once a nest is in use it is protected in law, so that surface has to wait.

Spikes are the wrong tool for very small birds, which can settle between the pins. Netting closes the space properly and is what we would point you at.

Not directly. Under a solar array the gap is what needs closing, so mesh or netting fitted around the panel edge is the right product.

Yes. Fence spikes stop birds lining up along the top rail, and the same strips discourage cats and climbing animals from using it as a walkway.

Stainless steel is made to resist corrosion outdoors, and polycarbonate cannot rust at all. Both are made for permanent outdoor fitting.

The polycarbonate strips are close to invisible from ground level, and the steel ones are low profile. From the street most people never notice them.

Very little. Check them once or twice a year and clear out leaves and rubbish, because once enough debris packs in between the pins a bird can stand on that instead.

Yes, if you fit them with screws or a removable adhesive. That is worth thinking about if you are renting.

Yes. Spikes are a humane, non lethal deterrent and are legal to fit. What the law protects is an active nest: under the Republic Act 9147, the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act it is an offence to damage or destroy a nest while it is being built or in use.

Repellent gel goes on surfaces where a strip will not fit or would look wrong. Birds dislike the texture underfoot and stop using the ledge.

It moves and flashes in the wind, which unsettles birds in open areas like a garden, an allotment or over fruit. It suits open space rather than a narrow ledge.

They suit larger open areas rather than a single ledge, and they work best alongside a physical barrier rather than instead of one. Tell us the site and we will say whether it is worth it.
