It works by removing the flat, comfortable surface. A cat that cannot get comfortable moves along, which is the whole point.
The points are blunt moulded plastic. This is a deterrent, and it is chosen precisely because it does not injure an animal that belongs to a neighbour.
Fit it to a timber rail with screws, to a concrete capping or hollow block with adhesive, or to railings with cable ties.
Sold per 50 cm with no minimum, so a garden boundary costs exactly what it measures.
Four pages on this site sell this one moulded plastic strip, listed under the animal each visitor came looking for. The strip is identical on all four. We would rather tell you that than have you order three things that are one thing.
Cats are a boundary problem rather than a spot problem. The fence is a road, and cats use the same road every night. Treat 8 metres of a 10 metre boundary and the traffic simply narrows to the 2 metres you left.
Height helps but does not decide it. A cat that can clear the whole fence in one jump is not stopping on the top at all, and no strip changes that. What the strip stops is the pause: the sitting, the watching, the spraying and the route along the capping.
There is a neighbourliness argument for the plastic version here specifically. It is blunt, it is obviously blunt when somebody looks at it, and that matters when the animal you are deterring lives two doors away.
If the cats are coming for something in particular, a bird feeder, an outdoor kitchen, a litter tray of a different household, deal with that too. A deterrent moves an animal along; it does not remove the reason it came.

Will these hurt a cat?
No. The points are blunt moulded plastic and they are designed to be uncomfortable to sit on, nothing more.
Will they stop a cat jumping the fence entirely?
No, and nothing on this site claims otherwise. They stop a cat settling on the fence top and using it as a route.
How much do I need?
The whole boundary. Cover 8 metres of 10 and the cats use the remaining 2.
Which fence types do they suit?
Timber rails, concrete cappings, hollow block wall tops, metal gates and railings. All four have a straightforward fixing.
Do I need the stainless version instead?
Not for a garden fence. The plastic strip is cheaper, needs no assembly and does not rust, which is enough for a boundary.
Will they annoy my neighbours?
Less than a sharp product would. Being visibly blunt is part of why we recommend the plastic strip on this page in particular.
Can I fit them to a gate?
Yes, and treat the gate as its own run. The gap over the gate post is the place cats find first.
What about a trellis on top of the fence?
Fit to the trellis rail if there is a flat one. If the top is a lattice edge, there is nothing to sit on and nothing to fix to.
They are getting in over the roof of my shed.
Treat the shed edge as part of the boundary. Cats route over anything at fence height.
Do they work against dogs?
They are not intended to, and a dog is not usually walking along a fence top.
Will they stop cats spraying?
They stop the spraying that happens from the fence top. A cat spraying at ground level is a different problem.
Is there anything I should not fit them to?
A handrail, a gate you grip to open, or any surface people put a hand on.
What are they made of?

How many do I need?
Measure the whole run, divide by 50 cm and round up. A boundary is only as good as its shortest untreated section.
How do I fix them down?
Screws or nails into timber, adhesive or double sided tape on brick and render, cable ties on railings. There are fixing holes moulded in.
Do they need assembly?
No. This is the difference between this strip and the stainless one: it comes out of the packet finished.
Can I cut them?
Yes, they divide to length for a short run or an awkward corner.
Do they hurt the cat?
No. The points are blunt moulded plastic and they are there to make a surface uncomfortable to stand on, not to injure anything.
Will they rust?
There is no metal in them, so no. That is the case for choosing plastic over stainless where the look matters more than the exposure.
Will the sun make them brittle?
The polypropylene is rated for sun and rain. It stays flexible enough to sit on a fence top that moves in the wind.
Why choose these over the stainless strip?
Cost, appearance and the fact that they need no assembly. Choose stainless for coastal exposure, for a commercial specification, or where you want the least visible fitting.
Are they safe around children and pets?
Fit them where nobody grips: the top of a fence, a wall capping, a ledge above head height. They are blunt, but a fence top is not a handrail.
How long do they last?
They are made for permanent outdoor use. We do not publish a service life, because it depends on the site rather than on the product.
