Looking after it
Clear leaves and nesting material out from between the pins once or twice a year. Once enough debris packs in, a bird can stand on that instead of on the spikes, which is the one way a fitted strip stops working.

Gulls do not perch on narrow ledges the way pigeons do. They settle on ridges, flat roof areas, chimney tops, masts and boat fittings.
Because that means coastal air, the stainless version is the one to fit. Salt destroys cheap plated steel within a season.
Sold per 50 cm with no minimum, and cable ties make short work of rails and spars on a boat.
It works by removing the standing area. A gull that cannot get both feet down does not stay.
Worth saying plainly, because it decides what you order. Nine pages on this site sell the SAME stainless strip, named for the animal people type into a search box. There is no different spike behind the pigeon page or the seagull page. What changes from page to page is the advice, and that genuinely does change.
Gulls are the reason to think about approach rather than about the surface. A pigeon drops onto a ledge; a gull glides in over open space and needs a clear run and a stable place to put down. A ridge line, a parapet corner or a flat roof edge with nothing in the way is exactly that.
Treat the whole ridge, not the section they are using. A gull that finds four metres of a six metre ridge covered simply uses the other two.
Coastal fixing is unforgiving. Salt gets under adhesive, and a mechanical fixing plus a bead of UV stabilised silicone is worth the extra ten minutes. This is the one page on the site where we would talk somebody out of the cheaper plastic strip.
On boats, cable ties around the rail or the spreader are neat, removable and salt proof. Check them at the start of each season, because UV eventually gets to a cable tie even when it does not get to the strip.

Are these different from your standard bird spikes?
No, the same 304 stainless strip. This page is about coastal placement and fixing.
Why stainless rather than the plastic strip?
Salt air. The plastic strip will not corrode either, but on a roof or a boat the stainless version holds its shape and takes a mechanical fixing better.
Where do gulls actually land?
Ridges, chimney tops, parapet corners, flat roof edges, masts, spreaders and davits. Look for the mess and the noise together.
Do I need to cover the whole ridge?
Yes. Partial coverage of a ridge line simply concentrates them on the part you left.
Will they work against nesting gulls?
They prevent a new nest site. They do nothing about an active nest, and an active nest should be left alone until it is finished with.
Can I fit them to a boat?
Yes, with cable ties around rails, spreaders and davits. Check the ties each season, because UV reaches them before it reaches the strip.
Will adhesive hold on a salty roof?
Not on its own, not for long. Use screws where you can and treat the silicone as a seal rather than as the fixing.
Gulls are aggressive near the roof. Is fitting safe?
Not during the breeding season, and not by you if it means working at height. Fit outside the season and use someone equipped for roof work.
Does the strip damage roof tiles?
Adhesive on a tile leaves a mark. On a ridge, fixing into the mortar joint or using a ridge clip is kinder to the roof.
Will it stop them dropping shellfish on the roof?
Only if they were standing on the roof to do it. A gull passing overhead is not a spike problem.
How many strips for a 10 metre ridge?
Twenty. Measure and round up, and buy the extra strip rather than leaving 30 cm bare.
Do they work on smaller terns and waders?
Less reliably, because a lighter bird needs less room. For small coastal birds netting is the better answer.
What are they made of?
304 stainless steel pins on a UV stabilised polycarbonate base. The pins do not rust and the base does not go chalky in the sun.
How are they sold?

How many strips do I need?
Measure the run in centimetres, divide by 50 and round up. The half metre you leave bare at the end is exactly where they will stand.
Do I need two rows?
On anything wider than about 15 cm, yes. One row down the middle of a wide ledge leaves landing room on both sides of it.
What do I fix them with?
UV stabilised silicone adhesive on masonry and tile, screws or nails where there is something to bite into, cable ties on railings and pipes.
Do I have to prepare the surface?
Yes, and it is the step people skip. Scrape off the old droppings and moss, wash the surface, let it dry. Dirt under adhesive is why a strip lifts after one rainy season.
Can I cut them?
Yes. Trim the last strip so the run finishes flush and there is no gap at the end.
Will they fit a curved ledge?
Yes, in short lengths. Several 50 cm pieces follow a curve; one long piece forced round it will lift at the ends.
Do they hurt the gull?
No. The wires are blunt and closely spaced. The animal arrives, finds nowhere to put its feet, and goes somewhere else. That is the whole mechanism.
Are they safe around children and pets?
They are meant for surfaces out of reach. Fit them where nobody puts a hand: above head height, along a parapet, on top of a fence rail.
Will they rust in the rain?
No. 304 stainless is the reason this version costs more than the plastic one, and in a coastal or monsoon climate it is the version worth buying.
How long do they last?
They are made for permanent outdoor use. We do not publish a figure in years, because the honest answer depends on the site.
Are they visible from the ground?
The base is clear and about 5 mm high, and the wires are thin. From street level most people never notice them.
Do you install them?
No, we supply only. Anything at height should be a job for someone equipped to work there safely.
